Papers [manuscript]. 1844-1888.

Documents relating to the loss of the ship the "Condor" in 1853; a bible saved from that ship and presented to F.D. Wickham; and an album kept by Natalie Wickham in the mid 1800s. In 1853, Francis Wickham, his wife and three children sailed from Melbourne on the "Condor". The seven documents describe how the passengers were rescued when the ship caught fire in the South Atlantic. The documents include a letter to Captain Leighton of the "Condor", conveying the thanks of the passengers for their rescue. The Bible contains a note, dated Pernambuco July 18 1853, stating it was "saved from the burning wreck of the ship "Condor" and presented by the Master William Leighton to F.D. Wickham a passenger with his wife and three children ...". The album, kept by Natalie Wickham in the mid 1800s, contains press cuttings, signatures, a passport, sketches and a poem. Of particular interest is a sketch labelled "Melbourne Australia my home in 1844"
